Paper: Modeling the Implications of Land Demand for Hydropower Catchments - SEA of Viet Nam's Quang Nam Province Land Use Plan 2011-2020

Date: 29 October 2012

This paper shares findings from land demand allocation modeling used to assess pressures on hydropower catachments based on development scenarios in Viet Nam. The modeling was applied as part of a strategic environmental assessment of the Quang Nam province land use plan. The paper was presented at the International Association of Impact Assessment Annual Meeting, held June 2012 in Portugal.

Paper: Internalizing the Externalities: SEA of the Viet Nam Power Development Plan VII

Date: 29 October 2012

This paper presents findings from a strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of Viet Nam's Power Development Plan VII. The SEA analyzed social and environmental costs and benefits of potential power generation alternatives and led to adjustments in the Plan's power generation source mix as well as its energy and efficiency targets. The paper was presented at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the International Association of Impact Assessment, held in June in Porto, Portugal.

Biodiversity Conservation Corridors Project (2011 onwards)

One of the major successes of CEP-BCI Phase I was the scaling up of its biodiversity conservation corridor pilot work.  In 2011, ADB approved grants and loans worth $69 million for Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam under a new project to further engage local communities in the sustainable management of important biodiversity landscapes.

An SEA of the North-South Economic Corridor Strategy and Action Plan (2008 to 2009)

The North-South Economic Corridor (NSEC) – linking Kunming to Bangkok, Kunming to Hanoi, and Hanoi to Nanning – is one of the flagship investments under the GMS Economic Cooperation Program.

Climate change risks, vulnerability and adaptation in agricultural areas in BCI pilot sites (2010 onwards)

It is widely recognized that rural communities in the GMS are particularly vulnerable to climate change. As most are dependent on agricultural for their livelihoods, anticipated increases in drought, disease, sea-level rise and weather-related disasters will affect local people significantly.

Carbon Neutral Transport Corridors (2011 onwards)

One of the flagship components of GMS Economic Cooperation Program is the establishment of economic corridors in the region. One of these is the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) traversing Myanmar, Thailand, Lao PDR and Viet Nam.

Activity

Cao Bang – Guangxi Transboundary Corridor Pilot Site, Viet Nam and PR China (2009 onwards)

Date: 11 May 2012

This new pilot site aims to enhance biodiversity connectivity between Bangliang Nature Reserve in Jingxi County of Guangxi Province and the adjacent Trung Khanh Nature Resrve in Cao Bang Province, Viet Nam. The establishment of a transboundary biodiversity corridor, with a protected core zone and sustainable use zone with agriculture, will provide an optimal habitat for wildlife, as well as the co-existence of human beings.
