WGE discusses the future direction of CEP
On 8-9 February, 2010, members of the Working Group on Environment met at a regional consultation to discuss the strategic direction of the Core Environment Program in Phase II that will be covering 2011-2015.

An expert consultation workshop on “Land Demand Modeling for Strategic Environmental Assessment” was held 4-5 February 2010 in Hanoi, Viet Nam.

GIS Training for the Cambodia Ministry of Environment
On 27 and 28 January 2010, EOC delivered a training on “Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Baseline Analysis” at the Ministry of Environment (MoE) Department of Environmental Impact Assessment (DEIA).
Six DEIA staff were introduced to GIS principles and strategic planning applications to create an understanding of the usefulness of GIS to their work.
The participants then exercised the preparation of spatial data overlays and production of thematic maps that can support planners in identifying opportunities and potential conflicts.
Two participants from MoE Department of Natural Resource Assessment and Environmental Data Management were invited to strengthen inter-departmental cooperation.

On 18 December 2009, an Official Ceremony on Forest Conservation Award and Commencement of Village Revolving Funds (VRF) for Tenasserim Biodiversity Conservation Corridor Site was held by Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) in Ratchaburi province, Thailand.

“Experiences from other GMS countries help us inspire our national teams”
The participant is disembarking the bus after a visit to the NSTDA. Although it has been a long day with exposure to cutting edge Thai know-how, state-of-the-art-technology and environmental science,
he and his Chinese counterpart are enthusiastic about what they have experienced and agree that they can each apply the new knowledge immediately when they are back in their home ministries next week.
The statement above comes from one of the participants in ADB’s Phnom Penh Plan for Development management seminar on sustainable development as he is telling me about the field trip.

Introducing Modeling for Strategic Environmental Assessment in Danang
Environment Operations Center (EOC) and Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) held a two day workshop introducing modeling as part of Strategic Environmental Assessment in Danang, Viet Nam, on November 30th - December 1st.
The workshop introduced two models focusing on biodiversity and land use to 20 experts from Quang Nam province and Hanoi.

GMS Shares Experiences on REDD
Revenue-sharing, the importance of involving local communities in the planning of REDD mechanisms, land management and REDD’s role in the coming negotiations at COP-15 in Copenhagen, this December 2009,
were all central issues that were discussed during the 4th semi-annual meeting of the GMS Working Group on Environment (WGE-SAM4) which met 25 – 26 November in Bangkok, Thailand.

Green Governors Discuss REDD
On Thursday 12 November 2009, on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting that was hosted in Singapore,
a round table event for progressive Asian Governors was organized by ADB in collaboration with the Singapore-based private sector company Carbon Conservation.

National Expert Team Builds Criterion Tree
On 28 October 2009, Water Resources and Environment Administration (WREA) conducted a consultation workshop to develop a Spatial Multi Criteria Analysis (SMCA) criterion tree for rubber and sugar cane concessions
Facilitated by EOC, a group of national experts from different ministries and agencies including WREA, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, National Land Management Authority (NLMA),
Ministry of Information and Culture(MOIC), Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) and Ministry of Industry and Mines (MEM) met.

Seminar hosted in Bangkok on "Addressing Climate Change in Asia: Impacts on Food, Fuel and People"
Supported by the GMS-EOC, a seminar entitled "Addressing Climate Change in Asia: Impacts on Food, Fuel and People" was hosted on Wednesday 25th of September, at the ADB's Thailand Resident Mission.
Designed to inform regional action to promote climate solutions, the seminar was a launch space for 3 studies, commissioned by the ADB, investigating how climate change would impact agriculture, energy security and migration in Asia.
