To create synergy and avoid duplication, development planners need to know what other organizations are doing and where they are doing them. Without this knowledge, opportunities to maximize impact and use resources efficiently will be missed.

Since 2008, the Environment Operations Center has provided a database of past, ongoing, and planned development projects happening across the GMS. This database, the GMS Development Maptool, is an interactive platform with an intuitive map interface for adding, browsing and reviewing these projects.

Starting off with about 60 projects, the database now has more 2800 projects plotted. The underlying application has matured as well, moving from a simple Google Maps window to more sophisticated software. Today, the GMS Development Maptool is built on ArcGIS Server 10 and comes with a new map interface that leaves ample room for future enhancements. The tool runs in any modern web-browser and requires the one-time installation of the free Microsoft Silverlight plugin.
