One of the nine sector-based working groups of the subregion, the WGE was established in 1995 under the GMS Economic Cooperation Program to
serve as an advisory body on subregional issues in the environment and natural resources management sector.
Two senior officials represent each GMS country: one from the environmental agency and the other from either the environmental agency or from a government agency in
the natural resource management sector.
The WGE facilitates the implementation of priority GMS environmental projects and ensures that environmental issues are properly addressed in projects in other sectors,
with special emphasis on the large infrastructure projects being developed in the transportation and energy sectors. It is also expected to address the issues regarding
harmonization of national environmental legislation and regulations within the subregion.
