10th Working Group on Environment Meeting
The Tenth Meeting of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Working Group on Environment (WGE-10)
was held in Hanoi, Viet Nam, on 23-24 September 2004.
The Department of Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam,
hosted the meeting in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The objectives of the meeting were:

To discuss the WGE Strategic Issues paper in order to arrive at new directions in WGE operations,
including consideration of the core GMS environmental program and broadening of the roles of development partners in a revitalized WGE;
-
To discuss proposed initiatives by the WGE for the Second GMS Summit in PRC in 2005, such as the Biodiversity Conservation Corridors (BCC) Initiative,
and other initiatives needed to address environmental issues facing other GMS working groups; and
-
To provide a progress report on the Strategic Environment Framework (SEF) Phase II project and the proposed RETA for Capacity Building for Sustainable Development,
and obtain guidance from WGE members on the directions for these projects.
The participants of the meeting included delegations from the Kingdom of Cambodia, People's Republic of China (PRC),
Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Union of Myanmar, Kingdom of Thailand, and Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
Observers/resource persons from the Danish Embassy, IUCN (World Conservation Union), Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS),
Swedish Environmental Secretariat for Asia-Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI)- Asia,
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), US Agency for International Development (USAID), World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
as well as ADB staff and consultants also attended.
The meeting was co-chaired by Dr. Nguyen Van Tai, Vice Director General, Department of Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE),
Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and Mr. C. R. Rajendran, Director, Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Division, MKAE, Mekong Department, ADB.
