An Environment Seminar for GMS Senior Officials

The Environment Operations Center of the Core Environment Program welcomed thirteen senior officials from various ministries of the governments of Cambodia, Lao PDR, PR China, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam who participated in an environment seminar last 26-29 February 2008 at the ADB Thailand Resident Mission in Bangkok. Mr. Jean-Pierre Verbiest, ADB Country Director for Thailand graced the occasion on opening day. The seminar which was titled "Issues and Sustainable Options for the Mekong" focused on the topics of climate change, transboundary ecosystem management, biofuels and transport. A roster of international experts during the 3-day seminar presented various environmental concepts, frameworks, perspectives and tools, which would strengthen the delegates’ knowledge and capacities to aid them in in their respective national and/or regional planning and decision-making processes. A study visit to Thai industrial plants and pilot projects showcasing the latest technological developments for biofuels at the commercial and community level scales was arranged on the fourth day. The seminar was organized by the EOC with support from the Phnom Penh Plan Secretariat, the National Science Technology Development Agency of Thailand, UNEP Risoe Centre, and the US Environmental Protection Agency.
