Component 4: Capacity Building for Sustained Environmental Management
Task Leader: Prof. Dawood Ghaznavi
Aim: Self-sustaining GMS environmental governance and management regimes.
Activities
- GMS Environment Operations Center established and operational.
- Identifying options for institutionalizing subregional cooperation on environmental management.
- Build capacity for science-based environmental management planning and management.
- Develop multistakeholder plaftorms for environmental management.
Progress to date (as of June 2008)
- Brainstorming Workshop on "Programming for the CEP" and "Institutional Future for the EOC"
- An Environment Seminar for GMS Senior Officials
- EOC Operational since April 2006
- CEP/BCI National Support Units established
- CEP/BCI Implementation underway through government and non state partners
- GMS University Network operational
- Cross-Sectoral Thematic Groups identified
- Cross-Sectoral cooperation through deputation of GMS officials from key sectors to EOC underway
- Orientation Seminars on: Strategic Environment Assessment (SEA), Environment Performance Assessment (EPA), Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS), Geographic Information System (GIS)
- Baltic Sea Study tour: participated by 18 GMS officials
- WGE Meetings: WGE-12, April 2006; WGE 12 Semi Annual Meeting, December 2006; WGE-13, June 2007
