Moves to Step Up Collaboration
The 16th Ministerial Meeting in Hanoi concluded with moves to step up collaboration.
At the meeting, GMS ministers endorsed key regional cooperation initiatives in various sectors, including railways, transport and trade facilitation, energy, and agriculture.
The ministers also provided guidance for a new GMS Strategic Framework, 2012-2022.
The four priorities – biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation, climate change, capacity building, and rural environmental management – were endorsed by the ministers
as the strategic direction in moving forward towards phase II of the Core Environment Program and Biodiversity Conservation Corridors Initiative (CEP-BCI).

16th Working Group on Environment Annual Meeting
The 16th Working Group on Environment Annual Meeting was held in Ha Noi, Viet Nam on 24-25 June 2010.
The meeting was attended by all WGE countries, ADB, co-financing and implementing partners, observers and EOC.
The meeting was co-chaired by Dr. Nguyen Van Tai, ISPONRE, Viet Nam and Mr. Pavit Ramachandran, ADB.
The meeting was opened by vice minister Mr. Nguyen Thai Lai and Country Director, Mr. Ayumi Koninshi.

International Biodiversity Day in Ba Vi National Park, Viet Nam
On the occasion of the International Biodiversity Day on 22 May 2010, ADB EOC joined a group of Vietnamese government and international organizations for a celebration in Ba Vi National Park, Viet Nam.
The event was organized by the Forest Sector Support Partnership to discuss achievements, challenges and interesting solutions to improve forest biodiversity conservation in Viet Nam.

GMS Nationals Present on Experiences with PES and SEA at international conference
This year in Geneva, Switzerland, the IAIA conference theme is “The Role of Environmental Impact Assessment in Transitioning to the Green Economy”.
ADB and GMS EOC is collaborating on planning a concurrent session on “PES and SEA in the GMS: Challenge and Opportunity” to highlight the Core Environment Programs corresponding thematic components and outputs.

Second consultation on CEP Phase II planning
On 9 March, 2010, the Working Group on environment met to discuss in greater detail the strategic direction for the second phase of the Greater Mekong Subregion Core Environment Program.
A presentation on planning the strategic framework for the larger GMS Economic Cooperation Program was given by Pradeep Srivavasta, ADB, and the GMS countries discussed how country priorities could be part of the regional strategy for the way forward.

WGE discusses the future direction of CEP
On 8-9 February, 2010, members of the Working Group on Environment met at a regional consultation to discuss the strategic direction of the Core Environment Program in Phase II that will be covering 2011-2015.

Piloting the application of GIS modeling tools among multi-sector government officials
An expert consultation workshop on “Land Demand Modeling for Strategic Environmental Assessment” was held 4-5 February 2010 in Hanoi, Viet Nam.

GIS Training for the Cambodia Ministry of Environment
On 27 and 28 January 2010, EOC delivered a training on “Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Baseline Analysis” at the Ministry of Environment (MoE) Department of Environmental Impact Assessment (DEIA).
Six DEIA staff were introduced to GIS principles and strategic planning applications to create an understanding of the usefulness of GIS to their work.
The participants then exercised the preparation of spatial data overlays and production of thematic maps that can support planners in identifying opportunities and potential conflicts.
Two participants from MoE Department of Natural Resource Assessment and Environmental Data Management were invited to strengthen inter-departmental cooperation.
Photo Story of Tenasserim’s Village Revolving Funds
On 18 December 2009, an Official Ceremony on Forest Conservation Award and Commencement of Village Revolving Funds (VRF) for Tenasserim Biodiversity Conservation Corridor Site was held by Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) in Ratchaburi province, Thailand.
